Planning a new room? Before you make too many design or decorating decisions, think about the ceilings. Some options are:
1. Stretch fabric
Stretch fabric ceilings give a rather dramatic effect and so tend to be reserved for big venue events. One can get very creative with stretch fabric ceilings. Possible uses can range from colour, fabric type, using the ceiling as a projection screen and displaying video or photos. Fabric can be installed in a variety of ways to give the room a three-dimensional effect.
2. Wooden beam
Wooden beams on a ceiling can give any home or space a grand and country feel. Beams can be independent of the ceiling itself, hanging a bit beneath it, or they can be attached right onto it. Beams can be slanted on an angle or straight, they can be rectangular and smooth or they can look a lot like imperfect logs. For a very attractive look it’s always nice to have dark beams on a white ceiling.
Slanted ceilings are often seen in attics or what they call ‘cathedral’ style rooms. They are very attractive and give a room a very warm feeling, almost as if they hug the contents of the room and bring it all closer together, including the people in it. A disadvantage is that they make the room a little bit smaller. This is less of an issue when the ceilings are high, but when they are low, people can often bash their heads, can’t store as much stuff etc.
It’s been a bit of a hot trend for some time now to have industrial looking ceilings in lived/worked in buildings. This of course is mores so the case for properties such as lofts, warehouse, design firms and other edgy businesses. The whole idea with industrial ceilings is that everything is exposed, including piping, fans, vents, even wires, depending on the owners style.
Textured ceilings are a good alternative to plain painted ones. They add a bit of dimension to the room while keeping it simple and relatively basic. Stucco is a popular choice amongst those looking for a bit of a textured ceiling. Others prefer a pattern of some kind. This might be craved right into the wet plaster or even stuck on with some sort of stencil or thick paper.
Ceilings can have a big impact on a room. High ceilings make a room feel bigger, slanted ones cosier, beams, rustic, and industrial urban. What type of ceilings will you choose for your new room?
The house will look old and boring with the usual window treatments hanging down the windows. The feeling is true if you practically see it every day. But you need not sulk and feel dry as you can make new changes and redecorate your homes. All you need is to add new designs of window coverings that will make it gleam with elegance and style.
Your windows need good designs and styles of window coverings. This varies from curtains, draperies, window blinds and window shades; and this can come in fabric, plastic, wood and metal. Made to measure window treatments are usually available in stores and these are offered at reasonable prices. You can also count on the quality and durability of these products.
In choosing the right window coverings, it is important to initiate creativity and style. First, you will need to choose a theme for your room and ensure that it blends well with the inner décor. You may prefer curtains and draperies as these create a richer and fuller look; and it provides you an ideal ambiance for your homes. But if you want simpler fixtures to add, blinds and window shades work best for this purpose. Its thickness can block average room temperatures from dissipating outside your windows. Hence you can maximize the uses of your heaters while it is very cold outside.
These types of shades can also prevent noise and provide you with privacy. This is really true especially if you live in a noisy area and you do not want to hear so much noise. The thickness of the shade tends to block these sounds from entering your room which provides you peace and quiet atmosphere inside. Hence you enjoy what you are doing especially at night.
Adding window shades save you from the cost of air conditioning, electric fans and heaters running around your house.
It is important to install these coverings as it regulates the amount of light entering your homes. It provides shade whenever the heat of the sun becomes intolerable. It also gives you a sense of privacy as people from the outside cannot see what you are doing indoors. It also adds glamour and style to the ambiance of your homes. And this makes you come home to a place where things and perspective complement each other.
Choosing between curtains, draperies, blinds and window shades may seem a difficult task to do especially when you get many options in the market. If this confuses you, perhaps seeking advice from a designer can help and he can provide you suggestions for window coverings. Heeding his advice will result to having a beautiful house to come home to.
Home Improvement can be the most rewarding experience you can embark on, if you like the do-it-yourself thing. I think maybe it is the accomplishment of doing something that you think you can’t do, so it is very rewarding when you prove to yourself that you can do it. I am getting too old to do many of the things I used to do. I am a Female, now 72 yrs old, and this is why I say that. I have sons that just leave me alone (even now) and let me do my thing. I love remodeling and decorating. I love to change something into something different. I have had people tell me I can’t change this to that, so I have to prove them that it can be done. One such thing was my Oak Kitchen Cabinets. They were stained and old, out of date, and the more I looked at them the more I was determined to do this. I have worked in a cabinet shop (which my Husband and I owned) so many years I can hardly remember when I didn’t, so I have a lot of insight on the Home front.
My Daughter and I live together and I think I scared her with the many things I wanted to do, but she is a trooper and I usually got what I wanted to do. So we talked about painting the cabinets and we decided we would try it. Painting cabinets was the big thing now. Even in our Cabinet shop, most cabinets are painted (though they weren’t Oak cabinets). The grain in the Oak wood is so bold, it is hard to cover it up. We searched around and found the type of paint to use. Prime the cabinets first, then hand sand and start painting. We painted the cabinets white. They were beautiful. My Son put on new Counter tops for us. We also took up the old flooring and put down new vinyl floor tiles, because I am not the kind of person that stays with a look forever. I love change. So I use Materials that can be changed out without breaking the bank. I don’t like slate or granite, Corian or floor tile that is so cold. I don’t like the granite or hard cold Counter tops either. These are costly and you cannot change these out inexpensively. You are stuck with them. I still like the change, so this is not for me,
No, I don’t own a million dollar home but I do own a comfortable beautiful home, that I change, from time to time and I keep it changed to suit me. I love my home! It is similar to the old fashioned southern homes with the big front porch, three sets of beautiful steps, and Gates on all three for my small, great grandchildren, when they visit. My Yards are beautiful and there was no gardener for these either. I have changed my yard, just like I have the House and now I am finally getting satisfied with the way it looks. There is so much Love in my home that even the richest person could envy and wish they were in my Place. I can sit back and enjoy my home, which has been an on-going project for over 20 years, and I have enjoyed every project I have ever done!
Reclaimed wood furniture is constructed with wood salvaged from old structures such as barns, textile mills, and warehouses. One of the greatest benefits of this type of furniture is that by reusing old wood, existing forests are preserved. Preserving forests helps to reduce global warming and protects habit for other living species. Along with the important environmental and ecological benefits, reclaimed wood furniture is typically inexpensive, durable, and can add unique character to any home or office.
Many companies that specialize in reclaimed wood furniture today do most of their business online. Online retailers are able to save on the expenses required to open a store and hire a large staff to operate, allowing them to offer their products at a discounted price. When shopping for a piece of furniture created from reclaimed wood, a buyer must be aware of a few pitfalls not normally considered with other types of furniture, especially when shopping online.
The number one thing to look out for is quality. The best way to ensure you are getting the greatest quality possible is by doing business with only the most trusted and respected companies. Look for companies with a long history of success by doing your homework before actually shopping. With the endless amount of information available on the internet, it should be easy to find reviews and references for any vendor. When shopping online, there is often a limited amount of information available. The initially available information is typically limited to only a few photographs and a short description. Before making your purchase, ask for additional information and photographs.
There are a few simple questions worth asking about any piece of reclaimed wood furniture. Where did the wood come from? Will the furniture come with a certificate of authenticity stating that it was created entirely of reclaimed wood. These questions and answers are especially important if one of your goals is to purchase an environmentally friendly product. There are a few vendors out there that will try to deceive their customers by claiming their wood is reclaimed, when in fact it is new wood that has been aged to look reclaimed. Others will only use reclaimed wood for the most visible parts, such as the top of a table, or the doors on a cabinet. It may not be important to you that the entire piece is created from reclaimed wood, but it is critical that you understand exactly what your are getting. By knowing what type of structure, and if possible exactly what structure, your new piece of furniture can add a sense of historical significance to your home.
It is also important to understand how the piece of furniture is constructed. What types of joints are used? Always look for dovetail joints as this is the most robust type of joint. The best furniture manufacturers will typically only used these types of joints. Are the natural weak points reinforced? An example would be the underside of a table at the corners where the legs meet the top. Sturdy tables will usually have diagonal braces underneath and out of sight at these corners. Unlike furniture created from new wood, reclaimed wood furniture will frequently contain defects to add character. It is important that the builder consider where these defects are so that they don’t impact the integrity of the piece. If the defects have been removed and the wood patched, check that the patch was created in the shape of a bow tie. This type of patch is more structurally sound than square or round patches. The final thing to ask is whether the wood has been tested for signs that it has been internally compromised by the presence of pests such as termites.
By taking the extra time to do your research and asking these few questions, you can ensure that you will be getting a quality piece of reclaimed wood furniture that will last for years to come. Understanding the history of the wood and where it came from will can add that extra touch of character and be a great conversation starter.
